Waxing Q & A

What is waxing?

Waxing is a method of hair removal with long-term results. With waxing, you can remove the entirety of each hair, including the root. If you get enough waxes, you may see a permanent reduction in hair growth on the areas that you target.

Waxing is notoriously uncomfortable and even painful for some. To minimize your discomfort, Holly at Zen Skincare and Medspa powders your skin before she begins. The powder acts as a barrier between your skin and the wax and prevents your skin from tearing as the hair is pulled out.

Where can I get waxing treatments?

You can get waxing treatments on parts of your body where you would prefer that hair didn’t grow. Many people get waxing treatments on their:

  • Arms and armpits
  • Legs
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Eyebrows
  • Upper lip

You can choose to have just one area of your body waxed, or you may get large areas of your body done at one appointment.

What types of wax are available?

Zen Skincare and Medspa offers high-end Silhouet-Tone® waxes. If your skin is particularly sensitive, you can get specialized wax for sensitive skin. Holly uses:

Hard wax

Hard wax hardens into shape after Holly applies it to your skin. Once it hardens, she grasps the hardened wax directly to tear it off. Hard wax doesn’t usually bond to your skin, making it the better option for sensitive skin types. It is best used for more sensitive areas like your eyebrows, upper lip, and bikini line.

Soft wax

Holly applies soft wax thinly and evenly across large areas of hair like your arms or legs. The wax sticks to your skin and can exfoliate it in the process. To remove it, Holly presses a cloth strip to the wax and tears away the wax and cloth at once.

How can I prepare for my waxing appointment?

Before your waxing appointment, you must tell Holly if you have used Retin-A to treat acne or for anti-aging reasons in the past 90 days, as the product can put you at risk for skin discoloration or hyperpigmentation after waxing.

You should also cleanse your skin in the waxing area before your appointment and gently exfoliate it, so the wax won’t stick. Don’t shave before your waxing appointment; the hair needs a certain amount of length for the wax to grab onto it.
